The first air guitar competitions were in the 1980s in Sweden and the United States. The idea of air guitar contests was a joke, meant to be a side attraction for music festivals but quickly grew to be the main attraction. In 2009, it spread to 17 more countries.

In the competitions, each person performs in two rounds. The first round each competitor chooses the song of their choice. The second round another competitor chooses a song for someone else to play. So it makes it a little harder because they don’t know what song they are going to play. Each of the 2 rounds lasts 60 seconds.

The judges use a 6.0 score system which is the same scoring system as used in the traditional figure skating score system. The judges must give a score from 4.0 to 6.0 in 4 categorizes. Technical merit, which is how much the performance looks like they are playing a real guitar. Mimesmanship is how convincingly the performer can mime their performance. Stage presence, which is a performer that has a talent of a rock star. Airiness, what they did besides air guitar.
